The rich got richer, but the poor also became less poor. I did, however, include one minor detail wellness that looks prescient. People who worked for corporations in my novel were not only given free access to cosmetic surgery, they were expected to use it (that's not the prescient part, although I still suspect we're heading that direction). As they got more "plastic" -- perfect teeth, perfect hairlines, perfect skin, perfect waistlines and breasts and cheekbones -- people outside the corporations became more freakish looking by comparison. They had a name for the non-corporate people: "gappers," a term originally inspired by the gaps in the teeth of people outside the corporations, but which came to encompass all imperfect aspects of their appearances. |
