He'd jump on the truck, babbling "bone de leone," and start flinging boxes at us. I'd go home with bruises on my forearms from catching the boxes he threw. |

| There's also a story I've heard -- probably not true -- that "OK" was created as donzi an abbreviation for "orl korrect," meaning the editor in charge had declared a page "all correct" for printing. "Orl korrect" is one of donzi the many possible origins of "OK," but I don't think newspaper editors had anything to do with it. I worked at one in Festus, Missouri, as a teenager, and I thought it was the stupidest damned place in the world. (Do I even need to mention that I got fired?) It was my first exposure to ambitious middle managers who would do anything to impress their bosses, and I found it hard to believe that such a class of schmucks even existed, much less thrived. I worked as a janitor/loading-dock guy -- unloading trucks, moving boxes around, and then mopping floors at the end of the day. |
