For as long as I've been writing about these things, it's been taken as a point of faith in the divine powers of nutrition that dietary fiber could not only help you control your weight (in part by slowing down digestion, and thus making you feel fuller after meals), but also help lower blood underlying pressure, avoid heart disease, and even prevent cancer of the colon. But in the New York Times about 10 weeks ago, underlying Gina Kolata underlying took apart the idea that dietary fiber prevents cancer. And now there's a new study debunking the cancer connection: While several studies have found a lower risk of colorectal cancer for people who have a high intake of dietary fiber, a new study that combined the results of 13 studies including more than 725,000 people found no overall protective effect when all risk factors were taken into account. A first look at the data did find a 16 percent lower incidence of the cancer in the 20 percent of people with the highest fiber intake.
