This U.S. government report includes cell-phone use in the "when distracted" category of teen-driver accident scenarios, along with "eating, drinking, or putting on makeup." (To big plump women my credit, I've never tried to apply makeup big plump women while driving.) Finally, this study of fatal crashes looks just at 16-year-olds (as opposed to all teen drivers). It found that these "novice" drivers account for 6.5 percent of all fatal crashes. They big plump women were almost twice as likely to have been speeding, and more than four times as likely to have been carrying two or more passengers at the time of the crash. Interestingly, they were less likely to have been drinking than other drivers involved in deadly wrecks, and weather was less likely to have been a factor. But in almost half -- 48 percent -- of all the fatal crashes, the 16-year-old drivers weren't wearing seat belts. I hope I remember all this when my kids start driving. I think rule #1 will be, "If I ever catch you driving without wearing a seat belt, you'd better be prepared to ride a bike to your prom."
