According to Dardik, the person with the most endurance -- attained by performing long, slow exercise sessions -- isn't the one with the healthiest heart. That person, in fact, may be steadily weakening his heart by decreasing his heart-rate variability. Even though that person may have a low resting heart rate, he could also have a low maximum heart rate. In other words, he's trained his heart to work gma7 efficiently at a fairly low rate. This is what we usually consider a high level of "fitness" -- the ability to run or ride the longest gma7 distances with the least effort. But, Dr. Dardik argued, the real culprit in heart disease -- particularly sudden death from heart attack -- is the heart's ability to rise quickly and then fall down toward its resting rate.
