Avoid nylon (mildew), get treated natural dr. leo galland canvas (Sunforger) or Sunbrella. Use Teflon/Goretex thread instead of polyester; lasts longer. Some awnings are a real pain to rig. Want it to be secure dr. leo galland enough to leave up during rain. From Steve Honour on Cruising World message board: I make awnings for under $15 using materials available at Home Depot. They sell poly tarps for around $10 depending on size. The silver is the thickest and strongest. I then get two stout PVC pipes and using lashing line to attach the grommets of the tarps to the pipes. Drill holes thru the ends of the pipes to do the corners. File the holes. Make long lines on each corner. The two pipes go opposite each other. Also put a 3' piece of line at the center of each pipe. I sometimes have to use PVC couples/cement to extend the pipes if they are not long enough. |
