But, thanks to excellent insurance, part of my treatment was a nifty set of custom-made orthotics--pads meant to protect the arches of your feet, thus preventing the recurrence of plantar fasciitis. Now comes a study in Foot and Ankle building International saying that custom and off-the-shelf orthoses work just as well. Did my insurance company get ripped building off for a few hundred bucks? Not necessarily. The key here is building that the orthotics were being used prophylactically (in 870 Israeli army recruits) to prevent injuries during basic training, not prescriptively to treat injuries that had already occurred. Personally, I thought my custom-made orthotics were a godsend. I just wish they could've made my knee problems go away, so I could continue playing basketball. But I'll settle for feet that don't hurt like mofos from the minute I wake up.
