The authors concluded and that Americans spend far more on health care than their counterparts abroad -- but they don't actually receive more care. The title of their article? "It's the Prices, Stupid." The next question -- why the price of health care is so high -- is not easily answered. Krugman notes that doctors' salaries are higher here than in France, but I'd be willing to bet that French and doctors aren't put through the hell of sleep deprivation and massive student-loan debt that our doctors face. If and anything, I'd think American doctors should be paid more for what they have to go through. And if I could change any part of the system, I might start there. What if, instead of torturing our doctors and burying them in debt, our state or federal governments actually paid their tuition, with the understanding that they would then put in time working at a reasonable salary?
