I zipped my coat around her, two big eyes peered out, and we three trudged off down the snowy lane toward the farm. We passed the spring-fed brook, iced over but gurgling just as it does in summer, and continued to several make-shift sheds with all the sounds and smells of the warm jobs animals. Old Joe, jobs an Italian immigrant in his eighties, loved to see the girls giggle at the piglets and would usually emerge from the farmhouse with a lit pipe of tobacco, a great smile, and his invocation "God gave us another jobs wonderful day, eh?" We'd stand against rusting farm implements or walk from pen to pen, smiling and laughing in shadows or radiant sun, until cheeks turned rosy, until the animals took their lunch and settled down in some corner patch of sunshine. It didn't surprise me to see an advertisement for a change in zoning for the farm. I attended the Council meeting and found a slick Massachusetts developer, with Kohl's and Appleby's gleaming in his eyes, and several other Town residents resigned to the end of the farm for the financial benefit of Old Joe's kids....kids
