They briefly flirted with the notion of buying a Sam Morse hull weight loss to finish off. Finances settled that choice. "Wood was a choice of economy," says Kit. "A glass hull would have required a big chunk of money, all at weight loss once; in using wood, I can make a little money, put it into the boat, then work some more and put more money into it. When (his boat goes in the water, it will be paid for." Kit's wife holds a steady job to keep the family clothed, fed, and sheltered in the meantime. Strip planking was the construction method Kit felt best suited his solo building style. The backbone of the cutter is solid fir; the frames, sheer clamps, and shelves are laminated fir. The mahogany planking strips, I x 1 1/4" after concave~convex milling, are epoxied and edge-nailed together and screwed to the frames. |
