"The University College London copper team found that even working with a common cold can be harmful. "The study said it was the stress from working when ill which caused the risk of heart disease. ... "Researchers compared attendance rates with the health records of civil servants and found 30 percent to 40 percent of those who did not take time off when ill had double the incidences of coronary disease. |

We know that different types of exercise lower the body's levels of stress hormones in different ways. Endurance exercise tends to do it in the moment -- that is, you start dr. mirkin exercising, and your levels decrease. But strength training first raises stress levels, which then fall a short time after dr. mirkin you finish. (I assume sports like tennis and basketball have this same effect, although I've never seen research showing it.) Yoga, I'd think, should provoke the deepest relaxation response, since it's working against the dr. mirkin excitation hormones -- the catecholamines, including adrenaline -- that help you get worked up for weight lifting or basketball. (I know different types of yoga have different effects. Power yoga, for example, would probably provoke some sort of catecholamine response, since you need those hormones working to help your body prepare for the exertion.) But does that relaxation response produce a lasting effect? And if so, does it work to combat stress at the cellular level? |
